” Rob Swift : MF Grimm 101 “

Picture 1

On ROB SWIFT’S Hip Hop fun facts 2.0, he drops all types of jewelry about his 20 plus year relationship with Grandmasta MF GRIMM……..

MF Grimm. To put it simply, the name rings bells yo! Like not only in New York. I’m talkin’ WORLDWIDE! Some of y’all reading this might be familiar wit’ the name but don’t really know the half ’bout the inner workings of my relationship wit’ Grimm or the 6 degrees of separation which connect he and I. So wit’ that. I’m dedicating this latest installment of DJ Rob Swift’s Hip Hop Fun Facts to my brother, Mutha Fuckin’ Grimm.

Unbeknownst to me, Grimm would be connected to a second brother from another mother —-> Dr. Butcher. As the Universe would have it, Grimm, for a small period of time, actually lived with Kool G Rap predating 91. Dr. Butcher DJed for Kool G Rap. So that right there is the genesis of the relationship between Drew Daddy and Build and Destroy (Grimm’s original name)

” Straight Talk “

Picture 5

Here is the text version of the interview MF GRIMM & I rocked with CLAAA7 from the Lost Tapes site out in Sweden…..He asked some well thought out questions, instead of your average run of the mill shit that you have heard a million times…

CLAAA also gets props for taking the time to fully analyze the album in a thorough fashion (seems like a lost art these days unfortunately)…

SWEDEN STAND UP !!!!!

c7: Your music on the “GMV” series reminded me of in spirit is the original free jazz movement, by being chaotic and wild and free while still keeping a well balanced structure. It gives me the same feeling as when I listen to someone like Ornette Coleman.

DRASAR: Exactly, that’s all by design, it’s to try to make the samples move. I don’t claim to be an originator of any kind of styles, or a pioneer, nothing like that, I just try to bring a certain uniqueness and let there be a free flowing thing like you were talking about, you know, but also have a foundation in there, and the foundation would be breaks. The foundation would be dope drum programming, you know what I’m saying, heavy percussion! So even within that free form there’s still something deeply rooted, there’s still a nucleus to it… And I think that’s what’s missing a lot these days with production these days is that people try to be too experimental without a center, like there has to be some kind of foundation…

Yeah, that’s basically how I feel and you’re gonna hear more of that on “Good Morning Vietnam Part 3” – unpredictability! You’re talking about Ornette Coleman and how they would improvise and things like that and I want the beats to be like that too, cus’ you can’t tell what’s Grimm gonna say after every line, after every bar, you can’t predict it. And I want the beats to be like that too. There’s gotta be a synchronizity or marriage with that type of belief system right there, you shouldn’t know exactly how I’m gonna change things around, you shouldn’t know how things are gonna fall on a regular basis, you know what I mean.

But I also have to say that I’m still a student, you know, even though I’ve been making beats and been involved with deejaying for the majority of my my life, i’m still learning every single day. You know I’m far from a master, you know I’m just a hip-hop student, I don’t want any other titles anymore, there’s no need for any titles but if there was gonna be one, that title would be dedicated hip-hop student! You know, that’s my whole perspective, you never stop learning, you have to keep your ears and your mind open for different possibilites in hip-hop.

” Pezo : 120 Lessons Mix Re-ups “

Picture 4

*Originally posted 10/11/13

My cuzzo PLANET ROCKS / PEZO was at the crib (WAX MUSEUM) a few weeks ago laying down this VENDETTA VINYL powered mix to honor the Oakland graff crew “GFC” (If you don’t know, GFC is a massive crew that carry on the tradition of skills over lip service, each one teach one, knowledge of self, and staying productive and active)..

“P” was about to call it a day at the hour mark, but the mix was sounding so monstrous I told him he should add on another hour to take “motherfuckers over the edge”…
So to add more fuel to the fire he stacked on ANOTHER 60 minutes of straight heat for ya’ll…Also you should keep in mind this is a off the top of the dome, strictly live, all vinyl mix from front to back..Salute to the entire GFC, everyone at Vendetta Vinyl, NORTH STAR ZULU’S, and my brother PEZO for keeping those flames burning !!

If your looking for some high-powered Hip Hop frequencies, you just found it troopers.Big up to all the independent labels putting out that fly shit.

“More Library Pressure “

Picture 3

Being a die hard Hip Hop trooper trying to raise a three year old son has been a trip thus far….One thing that has really bugged me out is watching him naturally catch the “HOLY GHOST” when he hears certain breakbeats rocking…

As long as I can remember his spirit seems to go into “HYPERSPACE” as soon as those thunder drums catch momentum…So I enrolled him in a B-Boy class to make sure he gets the opportunity to rejoice and dance with other kids, learn the fundamentals, and add on to the magnificent legacy of this influential artform…….

I remember when my elders used to clown B-Boying and constantly told me it was a passing fad…FFWD to 2014 and my youth is carrying the torch for the cause…

WOW….

Anyway, the weekend is right around the corner – here is some theme music to bang out with…..

Compared to the big players like KPM, Bruton and De Wolfe you can hardly find any albums from the Bosworth library on the internet (one notable exception being the fantastic “Super Sounds Of Bosworth” comp). This is a shame because the music contained within this collection is top shelf. Most of the tracks find a perfect meeting point between funk, jazz and rare groove with some excellent breakbeats adding further spice to the mix. There is some crossover with other library compilations but who really cares when the quality is so consistently high? The tracks by Paolo Zavallone And His Orchestra are superb, familiar names like Teupen, Bastow and Snell all shine and “Hula Rock” with its subterranean bassline is always an enjoyable listen. The key to the Music For Dancefloors series is that the compilers took a disparate range of music and put it together in a way that sounds organic and compelling. It’s truly a must have.
