The first time I heard PHOREYZ was on a John Doe live “GET BACK” mixtape alongside MELLO-D….What caught my ear was his selections, composition, and well thought out blends…

Being a die hard Hip Hop trooper trying to raise a three year old son has been a trip thus far….One thing that has really bugged me out is watching him naturally catch the “HOLY GHOST” when he hears certain breakbeats rocking…

As long as I can remember his spirit seems to go into “HYPERSPACE” as soon as those thunder drums catch momentum…So I enrolled him in a B-Boy class to make sure he gets the opportunity to rejoice and dance with other kids, learn the fundamentals, and add on to the magnificent legacy of this influential artform…….

I remember when my elders used to clown B-Boying and constantly told me it was a passing fad…FFWD to 2014 and my youth is carrying the torch for the cause…

Anyway, the weekend is right around the corner – here is some theme music to bang out with…..

Compared to the big players like KPM, Bruton and De Wolfe you can hardly find any albums from the Bosworth library on the internet (one notable exception being the fantastic “Super Sounds Of Bosworth” comp). This is a shame because the music contained within this collection is top shelf. Most of the tracks find a perfect meeting point between funk, jazz and rare groove with some excellent breakbeats adding further spice to the mix. There is some crossover with other library compilations but who really cares when the quality is so consistently high? The tracks by Paolo Zavallone And His Orchestra are superb, familiar names like Teupen, Bastow and Snell all shine and “Hula Rock” with its subterranean bassline is always an enjoyable listen. The key to the Music For Dancefloors series is that the compilers took a disparate range of music and put it together in a way that sounds organic and compelling. It’s truly a must have.

I recently met up with my dude from Chiraq, MATTROCKS to catch up on some things, crack jokes, and go in-depth about the glorious history of Chicago graff….

A few years back he helped put together a strictly Chicago graff documentary called “I Write On Stuff” that will give your graff morale a healthy boost….Over an hour of nonstop jewels….

“From within the vast depths of Chicago’s graffiti culture, the artists who took part in this massive movement give a unique perspective in telling the story of a now silenced voice.

At one time, Chicago had a huge graffiti culture whose presence was felt all over the city. Graffiti was everywhere. In an attempt to stop this movement, the city launched a series of counter-attacks. When imprisoning these people didn’t stop them, the Graffiti Blasters were introduced. A fast acting clean-up force that quickly wiped out almost all the graffiti in Chicago. From a citywide art gallery, to being covered by coat after coat of brown paint.But the battle still rages on”.

There’s a natural weakness to the memory of hip-hop. For a movement that transcends so many media most of its history is still firmly defined by its musical output. What’s said on a record tends to become the permanent record.

This is the slightly unfortunate case of the CM Crew (or Mob or Famalam). Immortalized on Kurious’ Constipated Monkey LP and the KMD song of the same name, the present day hip-hop listener might easily mistake the collective for a mere rap crew. It’s not that and it never was, exactly. While their ranks certainly boasted some serious musical talents—Kurious Jorge, KMD, MF Grimm, Powerule—CM was, in fact, a much looser affiliation with roots that can be traced back into the graffiti underground of the early ’80s and branches that have since grown into all pockets of the entertainment industry and beyond.

“It started as a graffiti crew before we were rapping,” says CM founder Kadi Agueros, who then wrote under the name EROTIC. “Criminal Minded was one of the names, Cash Money was another.”
