” Domino : Fuse Crate Diggers “

Picture 1

FUSE has been doing their thing as far as the Crate Digging series goes..This time around they brought along slept-on Hiero producer DOMINO for a little vinyl Q & A action…

Truth be told, DOMINO produced some heat over the years, but doesn’t get the accolades or attention he rightfully deserves…

“I’m really into dramatic music and orchestration and it stems from being a kid and watching ESPN and NFL films,” Domino says. “The influence of the orchestration and the drama that really got to me and has been an influence on me throughout my production career.”

But the most sought-after records in his private collection are his own: Rare instrumental pressings of early beats for classic Souls of Mischief tracks like “93 Til’ Infinity,” which were given to Hieroglyphics by the label Jive and are now nearly impossible to find.

It’s his work on 93 Til’ Infinity, which turned 20 in March of last year, that makes Domino the most proud”.

” Flick Of The Day “

Picture 2

The hardcore rhyme warlord Percy Carey (MF GRIMM) sent over this pic of him posted up with the toaster at age twelve alongside Manuel and Kamala (RIP)….

While most kids his age were playing with GI Joe figurines – he was on a totally different frequency obviously…..A lot of dudes constantly yell all that wild roughneck shit but have never been on any type of real live BATTLEFIELD, while GRIMM has lived the life of warfare without terms…

I’m not trying to glorify anything, but please recognize the genuine article over smoke and mirrors…

*CLASSIC FLICK EDITION.

” Secret Society Steez “

Picture 1

I gotta give major props to the WU for masterminding a hijacking that has never been done before…This is beyond a limited edition steez, this release is on some whole other shit..

“Somewhere on the outskirts of Marrakech, Morocco, inside a vault housed beneath the shadow of the Atlas Mountains, there sits an engraved silver-and-nickel box with the potential to spawn a shift in the way music is consumed and monetized.

The lustrous container was handcrafted over the course of three months by British-Moroccan artist Yahya, whose works have been commissioned by royal families and business leaders around the world. Soon, it will contain a different sort of art piece: the Wu-Tang Clan’s double-album The Wu – Once Upon A Time In Shaolin, recorded in secret over the past few years.

Like the work of a master Impressionist, it will truly be one-of-a-kind—in lieu of a traditional major label or independent launch, the iconic hip-hop collective will make and sell just one copy of the album. And similar to a Monet or a Degas, the price tag will be a multimillion-dollar figure”..

Those dudes over at BBP-BX never cease to amaze me when it comes to assembling top notch B-Boy attire…..While some companies keep it consistently corny, these cats have found their own lane by constantly providing straight heat….

They recently dropped an AFRIKA BAMBAATA line that caught my attention (Renegades Of Funk hats, Hoodies, and Tees)…

Picture 11

And if that’s not enough shock treatment for you : peep this exclusive STUSSY – BBP Varsity jacket they came up with for the 45 King…..WOW.

” True Masterz Steez “

Picture 9

With so much music coming out on a daily basis it’s easy to get lost in the sauce, even if you are bringing something substantial to the table….

My cuzzo PEZO from “Funk What Ya Heard” put me up on a group from LA called True Masterz that I had been sleeping on (I have seen the name around, but maybe I felt some type of way about them rocking the same name as the producer that was once affiliated with the WU, so I never gave it a listen)……After giving their new wax some decent burn yesterday I was totally surprised by how many raw joints they have under their belt….

The duo have a BANDCAMP page that is flooded with all types of material…

” Divine Styler : Architectonic “

Picture 2

WOW…..

I was surprised just like you probably are to hear that DIVINE STYLER had a surprise up his sleeve for 2014…Instead of doing the “impulsive blog post thing” like the majority of cats do nowadays – I made sure to give “Architectonic” a thorough listen….

The production is not exactly my cup of tea (You know how I rock on this side), but the way DIVINE completely blacks out on the track has me in complete shock mode right about now, plus the video is creative, dusted, and original just like I have come to expect from him over the years….

This RHYME SYNDICATE alumni hasn’t lost a step….

Architectonic, the new single from Divine Styler – taken from his forthcoming album ‘Def-Mask’.

Tour scheduled for late 2014 – Contact info@push-tone.com for more details.

” More O.S.T. Dramatics ”

Picture 11

*Yes, I know Budy Maglione is two people, but the above photo is so funny that I had to use it…

One of my pet peeves when it comes to Hip Hop production is beats that are laced with FAKE DRAMA….

Hopefully you understand what I’m talking about (second rate spooky sounds, fluffy drum programming, predictable build ups, typical Scarface samples, etc)….If your in the mood for “true to the grain” dramatic frequencies take a listen to my top pick off the CANNIBAL FEROX OST by Budy Maglione…..BLAM,BLAM…

REVIEWS

Like many of the Italian cannibal films, the soundtrack is just as powerful and effective as the disturbing butchery. Cannibal Ferox features a soundtrack that is more 70s cop show than many of its counterparts. The use of funk guitar, bass, rock piano and synthesizer makes for a fun yet still powerful sound. It’s 70s recklessness with an 80s sensibility, perfect for a film that rides the line between two decades. The bulk of the soundtrack was done by Budy-Maglione, a partnership of Roberto Donati and Fiamma Maglione (who also appears in the film). This pair was responsible for collaborating on such films as Eaten Alive (1980) and Daughter of the Jungle (1982)

” The Funkyman Speaks “

Picture 2

Here is another dose of BX action – this time around Mr. LORD FINESSE rocks a little Q&A with the folks over at HIP HOP TERRORDOME….

Ghost Effect: There seems to be a disconnect between the “old school” and “new school” Hip-Hop generations. Why do you think that is?

Lord Finesse: “I believe in a few things. I believe in good music and being different. Most of all I believe you must know your culture. The disconnect comes from the new generation’s lack of knowledge about their culture. They get on interviews and call older artists ‘irreverent’ but they wouldn’t be able to do that in Jazz, Rock n’ Roll and R&B. You can’t go to the R&B scene and start calling Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder irreverent because they’re old. They wouldn’t have that. Newer generations need to realize a lot of people like Afrika Bambaataa and DJ Kool Herc and a ton of other artists laid a lot of groundwork for you to be where you are. I don’t care what anyone rhymes about. It could be about pink rhinos, purple spaceships or what ever. All that matters is that you know and love your craft and culture.”

Ghost Effect: What are some solutions to this problem?

Lord Finesse: “The new generations need to have a plan before entering the music business. Some artists want an audience and some want a fan-base. We need to let them know the difference. A car crash can get an audience but once the scene is picked up the audience goes away. A fan-base grows with you. They’re there through thick and thin. I started making music because I wanted to contribute and make an impression. I have been blessed to have a good fan base. In order to get a solid fan-base you must have love for the culture. You come in with the pure intentions to become an artist but when radio and making club records come into play your intentions become watered down. When you do that you end up selling yourself out just to fit in. You must understand your culture, be a risk taker and become business savvy.”

” Minnesota Speaks “

Picture 3

When cats usually talk about MINNESOTA, it revolves around his gritty production prowess (Which is understandable), but his bars are crazy enough for me to label him one of the best producers on the microphone….

The elusive Bronx Bomber took some time out to drop serious jewelry with Amir Sai’d that will hold your attention…

BeatTips: Right now, reflectin’ back on your career, what producer or producers had the most influence on you early on? Who took you in early on?

Minnesota: SHOWBIZ!!! From Diggin’ In The Crates. That nigga opened my ears! Back when niggas was just sampling. Showbiz was the one that told me that I was listening to the records all wrong. Like, I would sample 1,2,3,4. He taught me 3 ½, 4 ½, 2 ½; like to catch it so awkward where nobody would be able to figure out what you did. He was the first person that showed me how to chop. And I just took it to Mars. He was on the SP 1200… I can always say that I owe all of that to Showbiz from Diggin’ In The Crates.

BeatTips: So how were you choppin’ before Show put you on?

Minnesota: Musically, it was like, when I got on the machine… you know how some producers are crazy over the megabytes and the gigahertz. I don’t know about none of that shit. I’m not technical AT ALL! My setup is hilarious to producers, when they come to my house, ‘cuz my shit is hooked up to a CD player! Niggas be buggin’ like, “Yo, where’s the studio?” I’m like, ‘Fuck a studio.’ I’m always more for the feeling of the music, or more for the frequency. Niggas be having the biggest studios and THEY BE TRASH!!! It’s never the machine, it’s the nigga.
