The bespectacled Large Professor leads the ceremony, backwards cap on, commanding the DJ to stop and re-start the tape. But this time…LOUDER. A dozen on-stage teenagers attempt to mean mug, but they can barely conceal their euphoria. For the first time, they’re about to perform what was immediately hailed as the best posse cut ever (unless you preferred “The Symphony.”)

Large Professor introduces his crew: Joe Fatal, Akinyele, and, of course, Nasty Nas, the Jesus-snuffing prodigy from Queensbridge, already revered as the second coming of Rakim, the God MC. Extra P roars for the DJ to “turn that shit up.” Sleigh bells shake over the boot stomping Bob James drums. Sinuous guitar lines lifted from Vicki Anderson create havoc. The crew simultaneously bang their heads, throw their hands in the air, and then Nas obliterates the binary between heaven and hell. It’s the platonic ideal of what people talk about when they talk about “real hip-hop.”

90 percent of the time when I talk to AYATOLLAH or ARCHITECT on the phone they are in the middle of making a new beat….Some people are passionate about their craft, but these dudes are on a whole different level when it comes to dedication…

It’s inspiring that after putting out music since the early 90’s, ARCHITECT is still focused on cranking out grimey, unpredictable, dusted out beats…..He recently uploaded a few joints to his Soundcloud page that put a little pep in my step….

Fame is a very interesting construct….

On one hand you got your types that start to actually believe the hype….All of the sudden they become self-absorbed and act as if the word revolves around them…Then you have your types that become disgusted by the industry and go into self imposed exile to get away from all the shenanigans….

When I saw footage of CRAIG MACK last year at a church in South Carolina as a member of some type of alleged Christian cult – I was somewhat puzzled but not completely…..Here is a guy that dropped the stellar “Get Retarded” 12 inch, became EPMD’s roadie, somehow linked up with Puffy and became as big as you possibly could in the Hip Hop world circa 1994 with “Flava In Your Ear”….That shit was literally EVERYWHERE….I MUST ADMIT I was a bigger fan of the GET RETARDED Craig Mack, but I was hopeful things would turn around until the release of his very luke-warm debut album “Project Funk The World”…It appeared that he watered down his sound and tried to assimilate into the current trends that were popping off..

FFWD to 2017 and we get the in-depth “Crazy Like that Glue” documentary that deserves your attention…
