” Under The Radar “

Picture 1

Contrary to popular belief, the last ten years were stacked full of top notch vinyl releases….It’s seems like every other month a different independent label pops up to make sure that wax addicts get blessed with an array of heat to cop…

CROOKED CAT RECORDS from Germany put out a few pieces this year that you should peep..For instance this Millenium – “Kaos Theory EP” will perk your ears up…

TUNE IN….

“Born in Baltimore and raised in DC, Millenium teamed up with House of Abdul to record a bunch of dope joints. In 1998 he released his first album called “Kaos Theory” over House of Abdul Records which was only available on Casette and CD, in case you found one of those rare copies. 2 years later they finished his second album “Most Thorough” which never saw the light of day. Now, 16 years later our Crooked Cat “Bad Beppo” went out to visit the House of Abdul to get a bag full of those joints to feed his family with barrel aged fruits from the past. Crooked Cat Records presents “Kaos Theory EP”. The 12″ comes along with 3 tracks from Milleniums first album “Kaos Theory” and 4 unreleased tracks from his second album “Most Thorough” on the flipside. Get your copy on http://www.crooked-cat-records.com. If you lucky you catch one of the extra goodies which we will randomly put to the orders. Watch out”.

“Philadelphia DJs lil’dave (Illvibe Collective) and Personify (Little Big Things) have joined forces to bring you Gotcha Covered – a genre bending mega-mix of covers songs from the mid-60s to the present. With more than 35 years of DJing and music collecting between them, these fellas dug deep in their collections to pull tracks for Gotcha Covered and spent months mixing, cutting and blending together more than 90 covers spanning Funk, Soul, Jazz, Afrobeat, Latin, Bossa Nova, Boogaloo, Reggae, Steel-Drum Band, Brass Band, R&B and Hip-Hop, to name a few. From the super rare to the under-appreciated and forgotten to the more common cover versions, Gotcha Covered offers up something for the serious digger and the casual listener alike. If you love good music, stop what you’re doing, grab a copy of the mix, and prepare to be taken on a tour of some of funkiest and most soulful covers ever laid down. JAKE ONE is the special guest for Cratery #67….

PEEP…

“His Cratery confession:
“I made a few beats off Cratery. One in particular turned out really dope. It’s definitely a slap. You guys had a few episodes with a couple things I had to jack.”

On avoiding old head syndrome:
“That’s the hardest thing in the world. But I honestly love what the younger generation is doing. I just try to keep what makes me good, but learn from what the younger guys are bringing to the table. Being an old head complaining on Facebook about the state of hip-hop is just not a good look. 20 years from now, the new kids will be reminiscing about how Soulja Boy was the man. It’s all relative to your generation. I just can’t go out like the Chi-Lites making struggle records in ’89.”

His thoughts on his hometown Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks:
“Just stay the course and you’ll be rewarded. To spend almost 30 years watching a team not be successful, and finally we win so dominantly? That’s the best feeling. And the victory felt better cause it felt like Seattle was on. Macklemore becoming the biggest thing in music had Seattle popping and then we win Super Bowl? It just felt good for the city not be purely on some hate shit for once (laughs).”

Why his homie Chan Dogg is integral to the fibre of the music industry:
“Chan Dogg is just a major factor in the game, man. There aren’t too many people that can tell you about Stevie Ray Vaughn guitar solos and James Mason album cuts. Plus he’s a got pretty decent collection of jazz records on Prestige that continues to grow in 2014. He’s definitely keeping it youthful at 50.”

“***DISCLAIMER: This isn’t mastered. I’m fully aware that the sound quality of some of the tracks aren’t the greatest, primarily in the first half of the mix (vinyl crackles, bad recordings, etc.), but I did try my best to make them listenable! Keep in mind that some of this stuff came from rare thrashed 45’s from as far back as 50 years ago!!!***

My overall objective in making this was to attempt to expose some interesting musical discoveries and gems from the Philippines to the public. HEADPHONES would be the way to go to enjoy this”.

” Hip Hop Battlefield vs. Daily Diggers – Kick Off 2 “

Picture 11

Before I even get started I have to give respect to my team mates who always keep it real funky when it comes to their kick game (FOODERZ, PEZO, SHA, RIFF MATH & KHUFU)…

Over four years ago KD from DAILY DIGGERS and I caught some serious wreck for a AIR FORCE 1 battle that showcased some heavy artillery…Now we are facing off again for another round of B-Boy morale, international kick prestige, and all that other fly shit….KD is far from a slouch, so I had to “go for mine” and sift through countless boxes before I found some top ranking torpedoes to launch off to London…HAHAHA.

*Please keep in mind that some of these kicks are OVER 10 years old and have NEVER been worn…

20141129_213630

1..NIKE SB TRAINER LOW 2 – (Black, olive green, tan swoosh, splash of candy blue)…

Explosive mix of suede, perforated leather and nubuck. The candy blue plastic netting on the side gives this shoe an extra power boost….Take a good look at that pic fam – see that sparkle ?

NASTY.

20141129_214037

2..BLUE / WHITE ADIDAS TOP 10…

I vividly remember DOODLEBUG from the DIGABLE PLANETS running at me full speed from across the street to salute these joints MANY years ago…The first thing out of his mouth was, “Where the fuck did you get those”?

I can’t recall exactly how the remainder of our conversation went, but I do remember that he was visibly open off these joints…HAHAHA..

20141129_213810

3..NIKE SB DUNK HIGH – CAMO Iguana/Black…

Black suede base with camo canvas overlays.White midsole and black rubber outsole wrap things up below…..YES INDEED..I copped these from my dude FOODERZ earlier this year and I damn near passed out when I first peeped them…FRESH IS THE WORD..

20141129_213420

4.AIR JORDAN / FLIGHT HYBRID 45 TRK BOOT (Stealth / White-Dark-Grey-Photo Blue)…..Awwwww shit, upper comprised of full-grain leather, Air-Sole unit in the heel, midfoot strap, and a lug outsole to give you traction during harsh conditions…Who needs TIMBS when you can troop around the battlefield with this type of ruggedness and finesse?…

You will be hard-pressed to find these ANYWHERE.

20141129_213909

5..ADIDAS – KAJ (NIMH – Clear,white,black, and red)…

Updated version of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s first signature shoe – which started the signature shoe craze in 1978…Definitely not my most expensive pair of kicks, but for nostalgia and creative purposes, I had to rock em…

NEVER SEEN ANYONE WITH THESE, EVER…

20141129_214305

* We are supposed to battle 5 for 5, but I’m going to pull out a wild card pair to raise the stakes..

6…NIKE VANDAL HI – TOM LUEDECKE “LASER URBAN DECAY” OG CEMENT SPACE JAMS..

WHOA…Classic olive / outdoor green, deerskin leather uppers, laser etching, and a “I do not give a fuck” aura….I might have to pull these out one day on the avenue just to give motherfuckers the quivers..YA HEARD…

So that’s it folks, another session of goodness brought to you by HIP HOP BATTLEFIELD & DAILY DIGGERS…Head over to his spot to see how he get’s down for his crown..

” Aloha Got Soul Steez “

Picture 2

When I visited Kauai, Hawaii a few years back I was hoping I would stumble across some secret society record shops…Unfortunately after intense research and politicking I was unable to locate any spots that were “holding”…

Next time when I roll out there, I will hit up the other islands because apparently Hawaii has a deep history of funk/soul that many on the mainland are unaware of….

Peep this clip for a boost of Hawaii wax morale…

“…Over the last few years Honolulu native Roger Bong has made it his business to become the authority on Hawaiian records, chronicling his various digging adventures on his fantastic Aloha Got Soul blog and feeding the more voracious US and UK collectors with utterly neglected gems from the paradise isle on a selection of superb mixes.

The music, ignored and inaccessible for so long, is, thanks to Roger finally filtering over the ocean and is feted by the likes of Psychemagik, Floating Points and the hardcore collectors at BBE records for its sun-soaked and gloriously carefree breed of island-tinted soul, funk and rare groove. Heavily influenced by the US and recorded primarily in the 70′s and 80′s, it’s basically impossible not to fall in love with this stuff.

Now, for the first time, Roger has flung open the doors and given us an unprecedented look into the heart of the record digging scene in Hawaii on this lovely film, sharing five of his favourite records and providing an insight into the best record shops and markets on the Pacific archipelago…”

My NS Comrade P-SOL assembled this 44 track strictly LORD FINESSE mix a few years back…Somehow I forgot to post it up when it first dropped so without further delay troopers – here it is….

FRESH IS THE WORD..

“P Sol: I made this mix for one reason; I’m a big fan of Lord Finesse. No gimmicks, just a great respect for what he has done for hip hop and music in general. Whether you have been listening to Lord Finesse and D.I.T.C. since the late 80s or if you are unfamiliar with him, I hope you enjoy this mix. Stating the obvious, this is a slim portion of the Funkyman’s discography. More to come”…

” Slept On Shots “

Picture 1

It would be ridiculous to say that MC REN is a underrated MC (He sold millions of albums and influenced a whole coast), but I do not think he gets the shine that he truly deserves….

Go back and listen to some his verses from the late 80’s to the early 90’s, and try to tell me he wasn’t dropping some of the coldest, boulevard barbarian bars out there…

When he dropped “SHOCK OF HOUR” in 1993 I was disappointed somewhat, mainly because he started rocking over sub-par production that didn’t match his aggressiveness….However on “All Bullshit Aside” he kept it extra gutter..

SALUTE.
