” Rich Medina – Afrobeat Mix “
Rich Medina keeps the momentum pumping on this recent Afrobeat mix for the ART DON’T SLEEP podcast…
“Fela Kuti, his message and the music he is credited for, means a lot to us over at ArtDontSleep. We don’t take his heritage in vein and aim to present a very serious homage to his greatness and the impact he has forever left on music lovers around the world.
We are also pleased to present our newest podcast, and Rich Medina was kind enough to dig into his Afrobeat Archives and bless us with a 100% all vinyl and LIVE mix! Download and or stream it free, here!
“The mix is a segment of an entire night of Jump N Funk at Martinez Gallery (RIP) in Greenpoint, Brooklyn from 5/17/03. Before Serato, and no CD’s, this is strictly analog Afro Heat for y’all. Love Afro Life!” – Rich Medina
” Limited Edition Steez “
When cats try to run up on me and complain about the state of Hip Hop I just shake my head in disbelief…
STOP ALL YOUR BLOODCLOT CRYING…
If they actually took the time to seek Hip Hop out they would stumble into all types of quality releases, past and present…For instance, Chopped Herring are back on the set with a new EP by a group called ZIGG ZAGG (Touch The Sun 1992-1994)….
This project contains tracks that have never seen the light of day for some odd reason….Take a listen, if your on the hunt for some under the radar sure shots….
TRACKLIST-

A2: Warzone
A3: Da Prognosis

B2: Y=Self ft. Shaquan

” Drasar Monumental On The Remix “
*Originally posted a couple years back..
While most people were sleeping last night, I was up in the lab tapping out some next shit…WHEW…..I really hate to pat myself on the back, but I feel like I am in some type of crazy zone with the beats right now…
For this weeks remix I flipped the vocals from Roc Marciano’s former group the U.N. on “Nothing Lesser”…..The original beat by Pete Rock is a god damn monster….Heavy layers of bass, odd noises coming from every direction, and of course crispy, well-cropped drums…..
So for my remix I wanted to try something different (As usual)…..Instead of going the chaotic, hardcore route, I opted for more of a laid back, crime boss feel…..Don’t get it twisted: you won’t hear any cornball synths, or any of that other shit….Just raw, stripped down chops….
BLAM, BLAM, BLAM…
* If you heard the original sample source- you would truly bug out because I sliced it up so crazily……LISTEN CLOSELY..
” Keep Vinyl Alive “
Despite popular belief, the sales of vinyl are increasing worldwide….Even with all the technological “advancements” over the years, some people (including myself) will never switch over to Serato or any of the other digital formats currently available…
If you believe in the power of vinyl I highly suggest you peep this 5 minute clip cuzzo…
” Joint Of The Day “
It’s a shame that T La Rock’s name is not mentioned more often when cats are talking about top tier MC’s…
In the mid to late 80’s his vocabulary, rhyme patterns, and hardrock B-Boy aesthetic was heavily influential..So much so, that some will even make the argument that LL Cool J straight up bit his whole steez…
HAHAHA….
There were talks of a T-La Rock documentary, but I haven’t heard anything lately about it (hopefully that will see the light of day)…
Until then, this monstrous Todd Terry remix of “It’s Yours” will hold me down….Turn the motherfucking volume up and rock out..
” What Part Of The Game Is This “
Wow….
Instead of blacking out when I first heard about George Zimmerman getting acquitted, I fell back and gathered my thoughts….To tell you the sad truth, I wasn’t surprised at the verdict because it was held in Florida where they try to rock the “stand your ground” law when it’s convenient…
A 17 year old kid was murdered in cold blood for merely walking around in his own neighborhood….Some people try to cover up their bigotry with all types of “jedi mind tricks” and nonsense about the “law”, but any halfway decent person knows what the fuck is really going down…
So stop playing games…Let’s be real, this trial was all about race and lack of respect for black people, children included…..Some cats are going to hop in the street and throw a couple rocks at some random windows – I think Stevie Wonder has the right idea by boycotting the entire state of Florida until they change the “stand your ground” law…..
Similar to what entertainers did with Apartheid, South Africa in the 80’s by boycotting “Sun City”….
JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON MARTIN…DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE 2013….STOP RACISM..
Take a listen to this song K-Def & Decapo put together to honor TM “No More Justice, No More Peace”….
” KA – Nights Gambit “
GAM-BIT.
1: a chess opening in which a player risks one or more pawns or a minor piece to gain an advantage in position..
2: (2) : a remark intended to start a conversation or make a telling point..
After listening to KA’S new album “Nights Gambit” from front to back, the first thing that came to mind was cold weather…I’m not talking about a flimsy windbreaker steez, I’m talking Woolrich status at “Soldier Field in the middle of December” cold….
Even though Summertime is in full effect, KA manages to conjure up imagery of Winter warfare on the streets….The self-produced beats are beyond the classification of minimalism – some of these soundscapes are straight up “naked”, which leaves room for the listener to fully absorb the bleakness of his vocals….
I’m not going to attempt to compare this joint with his last effort (Grief Pedigree), but they both rock a similar frequency that consist of stripped down beats, tales of boulevard battles, poverty, and other aspects of the “struggle”…
This isn’t for everyone….Matter of fact, even if your a die hard Hip Hop head you will have to be in a certain type of vibe to rock this from front to back…
HIP HOP BATTLEFIELD TOP PICK – “PEACE AKHI”...
