” Kankick On The Beats “
Oxnard, California beatsmith KANKICK has been composing his brand of lo-fi, hazed out productions for quite sometime now…
Check in on this session of instrumentals that should make your ears perk up..
“Kan Kick grew up in the city of Oxnard, along with several fellow hip-hop musicians including Madlib, Oh No, DJ Romes and Dudley Perkins. In the early 90’s he was an integral part of Lootpack, appearing on several of their tracks. He has also produced some of The Alkaholiks’ early tracks. Later he went on to produce a number of solo instrumental albums, as well as collaborate with several rappers and producers such as Planet Asia, Declaime and DJ Babu. His 2001 release, From Artz Unknown was his first official solo introduction and featured West Coast rappers such as Declaime, The Visionaries, Krondon, Phil Da Agony, Planet Asia and Wildchild”..
” Black Book Shakedown “
My dude young PRIZE (GFC / NS / SK) has been on his motherfucking grizzly as of late….Everytime I check for him he is getting iller with his hands..
Salute to you brethren for keeping it on the rise….
” New Shit On Deck “
AAWWWWWW MAN….
Just got back from a wild weekend….
I wrecked the decks at the AEROSOUL event in Oakland alongside Sha 1 & Planet Rocks (I will post up pics later tonight), had the opportunity to build heavy with SKEME & Shirt King PHADE, witnessed an ill graff session on the avenue, went to Reggae On The River with my famz and caught a wild dose of sun rays, and now here I am….WHEW…
While I was out on the field lil homie informed me that Jeru The Damaja got stabbed up a couple days ago (luckily he is alright), after doing some research I stumbled onto a new Jeru joint called “Solar Flares” that was produced by Large Pro……Be on the lookout for his upcoming album in the near future…
And while your at it, make sure to take a listen to this interview with JERU on Scope Radio (I don’t co-sign everything on their playlist, but it’s worth checking out to hear Jeru unveil a new track, discuss his future plans, etc)….
” Check In “
Chicago cut monster TOAD STYLE is far from a slouch when it comes to flexing his scratch vocabulary….He is also nice when it comes to crafting flavorful production…
Take a listen to this AZ remix and find out for yourself troop….Big up to all my peoples out in CHIRAQ.

Rock from front to back for maximum effect…
“Native Hawaiians cherished salt for its most important use, preservation. That’s exactly what Fitted x Aloha Got Soul are doing with the Hawaiian Salt mixtape: preserving the funky, flavorful music of Hawaii’s past. Enjoy 76 minutes of rare groove, soul, jazz and funk created in the islands back when R&B reigned supreme in Hawaii”.
” More Live Action “
You know it’s going to be a good day when you can watch 50 minutes of ULTRA MAG wrecking shop…
This performance went down in London recently to celebrate the anniversary of the classic Critical Beatdown album……Do yourself a favor and snatch up that popcorn, tilt your recliner back a little bit, and prepare for take off…
” Lord Finesse On The Wheels “

” Under The Radar – FAME LABS “
The FAME LABS crew have been dropping dirty joints for a minute now…One time Wu affiliate DARKIM BE ALLAH is the most well known member of the team, but their roster is filled to the brim with talent…
They just dropped a new project “Training Camp 2” that you should go track down while your floating around in cyber-space…..
Here are a couple cuts that should make your Hip Hop antennae activate..
” Limited Edition Steez “
If your an avid HIP HOP BATTLEFIELD reader than you would have noticed how much I have been praising Philly Lo-Life reppers, THE BOOZE BROTHERS…
Blood brothers Clever-One & Him Lo bring a tag team approach to mic wrecking that has held my attention for the last five years….Earlier this year Chopped Herring released a vinyl EP from the duo, now they have a Him Lo solo vinyl EP on deck…..
” Motion Man On Deck “
If knowledge is the 5th element in Hip Hop, I believe that originality should be the 6th element….In order to separate yourself from the pack you have to bring something unique to the table to ensure that your material stick’s out, or leaves a lasting impression…..
When it comes to originality Bay area rhymester MOTION MAN is in a class by himself….I can’t think of anyone that sounds remotely close to him (plus he is funny as a motherfucker)….
If you appreciate original stylings as much as I do – you should analyze this two hour mix of strictly MOTION MAN material rocked by DJ Wicked troops…Unreleased joints, collabs, freestyles, and all that other wild shit..
” Paul Nice Speaks “
The elusive producer, DJ, crate digger extraordinaire PAUL NICE gets the interview treatment with the good peoples over at Hot Peas & Butter….
Even though Paul has been around for a number of years, it’s somewhat difficult to find much info about him in cyber-space so don’t sleep cuzzo…
HPB – You’ve been out of the scene for a minute but musically you definitely haven’t missed a beat. What differences have you experienced in the business from then until now, especially since you run your own label?
P.N. – Well for one thing, the biggest difference has definitely been this huge shift in the vinyl market. While vinyl sales overall remain healthy and in some case even stronger than 10 years ago, the people buying records has changed drastically. For example, before Serato came out I had absolutely no problem selling 5,000 copies or more of a DJ-centric battle break record. Nowadays forget it, the whole DJ market is dead. What’s seemingly replaced it is the collectors market so you’ve got all these so called boutique labels and reissues popping up all over the place where you got folks selling 7” for $30 because they only pressed up x-amount. Now, I’m kinda-sorta guilty of that too but it’s what you have to do to adapt I guess. Do I like it? Not really.
