Regardless of how I feel about the majority of Del’s most recent material, he has definitely earned his spot in the books as one of the most off kilter, bugged out, creative cats of the 90’s and beyond….And with the right beats I still feel he can do a lot of damage out there..

The HOMELESS DERILIX from San Jose made their mark with the Stones Throw label when the imprint was in it’s beginning stages, and for some reason the duo didn’t remain with ST as they became a household name in the late 90’s (wonder how things would have turned out if they did)….

Pianist and composer Giovanni Fenati (from Romagna) had an intense recording career since the late 50’s. Starting with an orchestral repertoire, his style started to include contemporary elements aroud the end of the 60’s, and he released some albums under the nickname Mirageman for the Ariston label. Under this name three albums came out, issued between 1970 and 1972, but his previous two works, Music cocktail from 1969 and Per voi giovani from 1970 credited to Fenati, are in the same style.
Most of this keyboard-led instrumental production has little connection with progressive music, as demonstrated by the album titles, Per voi giovani and Alto gradimento were popular radio programs, and the albums were more in the easy listening/lounge music style.
Only the last one, Thunder and lightning, is definitely in a more progressive vein, with prominent electric guitar and flute over an orchestral background. Described as “Deep Purple jamming on some Henry Mancini-style instrumentals” on an Internet site, the ten track album is not far from the style of The Underground Set or Planetarium albums, and was released on the Ariston Gnomo progressive label.
Giovanni Fenati died in 1981 in a car accident.

Turntablist Doe: “The goal of a battle DJ these days is to figure out how to fit as many techniques and skill sets into 6 minutes. That’s why competitors are pre-producing their sets. It allows them to save time lifting the needle up and swapping records from the Turntable.”
Me: “…but don’t you think as a result, a part of the human element is being lost by pre-producing your sets though? Do you even realize that every time you switch records tension builds in the audience? That anticipation you feel as a spectator is so important to the exchange of energy between you and the DJ on stage. It’s like you hear a new song being dropped in and you’re anxiously waiting to see what’s gonna be done to that track. You lose that when you pre-arrange your sounds. Plus, I thought the whole point of what we do is to play a song the audience is familiar with, hone in a specific section of that song, then flip it completely different from the way it originally sounds?”
Turntablist Doe: “That’s the old style Rob. That doesn’t fly any more. Personally, I like being able to pre-produce my sounds. It allows me to perform my set perfectly. And if you think about it, figuring out how to line up a kick, snare and horn so that everything falls exactly where I need it is sort of creative in of itself.”
Me: “I don’t agree man. What’s wrong with being imperfect. You’re human. You’re not a robot. And yeah, lining up a kick, snare and horn makes the physical process of beat juggling easier but that’s not being creative in the true sense of the word. At least as it pertains to DJing/Turntablism. Being creative is taking a sound you want to create a melody with, brainstorming how you could extend that sound and solving that mystery by taking a piece of tape, placing it on the part where the sound ends and manually making it loop. Then, adding drums on the free turntable to create an entirely new beat. THAT’S BEING CREATIVE!”
Back in the 90’s if you were lucky enough to get your hands on a copy of GRAFFITI TV, you caught a glimpse of what type of activity was popping off in different regions….

In 1996 Camden New Jersey’s, Krown Rulers dropped a second album,”Death Before Dishonor”. Why they waited almost 10 years after “Paper Chase” to release another album is a mystery to me…Regardless, the sophmore jinx scenario didn’t apply to “KR” because ” Death Before Dishonor ” rocked some heavy joints…
For instance, “Memories Of The Ruthless”, features Grand Pubah (now known as G-Law) narrating tales of turf wars, shootouts, and revenge killings..You can tell by the way he spits his rhymes that he wasn’t too far from the mix of action….
This is straight up raw Hip Hop with no apologies…
You know it’s going to be a good year when you start it off with a TROUBLENECK BROTHERS demo….
