I have been checking a lot of beat tapes lately…Everything from old ” Dilla ” beat tapes, to up and coming cats dropping these type of joints…

Recently I came across a ” Bruce Li ” beat tape ( Hindu Kush ) that was pretty filthy…A lot of kung fu samples ( obvious RZA influence ), dirty drums, and all types of odd arrangements…What made me appreciate this project even more, is the fact that he made all of this with a S.P. 303…( I’m a lo- fi type of guy, NO HOMO )..

There is a rhyme that M.C. Ren flipped on the ” Kiss My Black Ass ” ( E.P. ), that always stood out to me….It goes a little something like this folks….

” Fuck all those niggas with live instruments on the stage / save that shit for parades..And while your at it why don’t you dress like a clown / and draw yourself a permanent frown…Rappers back in the days didn’t have band’s in the blueprints / cause it wouldn’t make sense……Niggas doing this should retire / niggas looking like Earth ,Wind and Fire…”

On the surface this rhyme might appear to be some simple minded shit to some, but in actuality ” Ren ” is dropping some heavy science here ( I will elaborate a little bit more in upcoming post HAHAHAH )…

And for the most part I agree with his theory…I would rather hear dusty samples being wrecked than hearing m.c’s get loose over live instruments any day of the week..

But ” The Roots”, ” El Michels Affair ” and several other bands would get my vote if I was to travel in the “LIVE HIP HOP BAND ” category….The United Kingdom’s ” Heliocentrics ” are another band that deserve some credit….

I can’t even front,I didn’t know of the great Brazilian outfit ( Azymuth ) until ” Madlib ” recorded a album with their drummer Ivan Conti…

On a recent digging mission in Vancouver Canada, the homie Dave Jones put me up on some of their material..I was truly blown away by what I heard, and vowed to cop every piece of wax I could find that bore their name.

Azymuth is a three piece band from Rio De Janeiro and the other two members are Alex Malheiros ( Bass, guitars ), and Jose Roberto Bertrami ( Keyboards )… They formed in 1972 and continue to record and tour to this day…

With over 20 albums under their belt, it’s hard to believe more people in the states are unaware of them..
