On one hand I’m happy that Common has been able to parlay his rhymes into a full fledged career and take care of his family, but on the other hand I wish that he would have stuck to the original recipe without all the EXTRAS (Ya feel me)..

And the so-called battle with that cornball Drake didn’t help matters..

Anyway, here is the demo that helped him get his Relativity deal in the early 90’s…FRESH IS THE WORD.

Lex Boogie From The Bronx (School of Sharks) & Aarophat recently connected to release the impressive cut “Panic”….Scratches by DJ Chinch 33..

Be on the lookout for “Invictus” and more heat from the duo in the near future…

Over the years I have managed to collect a heavy arsenal of Hip Hop related books….Everything from the “Gospel Of Hip Hop” to M.F. Grimm’s book, “Sentences”(don’t get it twisted though, I also read many other types of books HAHA) ….

My man from the “Scratch Shamans” recently hipped me to a new release entitled, “Groove Music: The Art & Culture of The Hip Hop D.J.” that looks like it is right up my alley..

“Today hip-hop is a global phenomenon, and the sight and sound of DJs mixing and scratching is familiar in every corner of the world. But hip-hop was born in the streets of New York in the 1970s when a handful of teenagers started experimenting with spinning vinyl records on turntables in new ways. Although rapping has become the face of hip-hop, for nearly 40 years the DJ has proven the backbone of the culture. In Groove Music, Katz (an amateur DJ himself) delves into the fascinating world of the DJ, tracing the art of the turntable from its humble beginnings in the Bronx in the 1970s to its meteoric rise to global phenomenon today. Based on extensive interviews with practicing DJs, historical research, and his own personal experience, Katz presents a history of hip-hop from the point of view of the people who invented the genre. Here, DJs step up to discuss a wide range of topics, including the transformation of the turntable from a playback device to an instrument in its own right, the highly charged competitive DJ battles, the game-changing introduction of digital technology, and the complex politics of race and gender in the DJ scene.

Exhaustively researched and written with all the verve and energy of hip-hop itself, Groove Music will delight experienced and aspiring DJs, hip-hop fans, and all students or scholars of popular music and culture”.

Before I even get started I want to send a major bornday shout out to Afrika Bambaataa (his bornday was yesterday)…You are a true inspiration – thank you for your sense of direction, strength, and commitment to this culture of Hip Hop..

Because of you I will be looking for the “Perfect Beat” for the remainder of my time on this planet…

SALUTE !

Since the weekend is here it’s only right that I splash you with some high powered frequencies….Here is a mix I put together over the last two days…Doubles, blends, under the radar rockets, remixes, and all that other wild BATTLEFIELD shit…

“DJShadow.com are very excited to announce a major new archival release exposing Shadow’s early production on the Akai MPC. Containing entirely unreleased material spanning from 1992 to 1996, the project is entitled, “Total Breakdown: Hidden Transmissions From The MPC Era, 1992-1996.” Included among the highlights are instrumental tracks from an aborted 1994 EP planned with The Gift Of Gab, which includes the original demo of what would eventually become “Six Days.”

The new collection of “MPC Era” tracks follows on from the much-loved “4-Track Era” releases from 2008 and 2009, and establishes a pattern which should be familiar to Shadow fans. “I like to follow up new material (such as the recent ‘The Less You Know, The Better’ LP) with a tastefully-done archival project,” Shadow explains. “As long as the old stuff is given a context and doesn’t overshadow the new, I think it’s a healthy exercise for me, and one that re-calibrates me for whatever new musical path lies ahead. I think it’s important to revisit where you’ve been occasionally so that you can determine where to go.”

Here is the first leak…

“Affectations”

This is the first color scheme for the Adidas Handball 5’s that caught my attention….I’m going to kill them this Summer when I rock these on the avenue HAHA…

If your growing tired of listening to sensitive busters on the mic, let me take you back to 1997 for a healthy dose of hardcore that will make you clench up your fist……

Salaam Remi had a short-lived record label called Norfside…..Out of all the groups he put out, “Major Stress” showed the most potential in my opinion……They released a couple singles, and eventually put out a poorly distributed album in 1997 called “Up Against The Wall”……

Good stuff…….Plenty death threats, boulevard bully rhymes, stick up kid narratives, and very raw production supplied by Mr. Remi……

Here are a couple highlights…..

“Snakes To Burn”……………Wow, if this doesn’t get your blood pumping something is fucking wrong with you…….HAHA….

“Tell Your Crew”………….Even with the off-kilter hook, this song still cooks……..

Back in the early 90’s I used to cop dangerous Nick Bonds mixtapes from the Tape Kingz (remember them ?)……

Usually the first half of his tapes consisted of rugged Hip Hop type tunes, and the second half would showcase more of a “traditional” dancehall steez….On Classic Cutz ,part 2 he follows this formula with interesting results….

Turn your motherfuckin volume up, grab that ice cold Red Stripe, and let this one rock all the way through if you know what’s best for you…

Philly Lo-Life ambassadors “The Booze Brothers” are no joke when it comes to dismantling microphones….

On this collection of joints compiled by Fisher you will hear crazy stories revolving around boosting, killing, guzzling copious amounts of liquor, catching wreck, taking out suckers, womanizing, and all that other entertaining shit….

* Don’t ask me why this includes a very off beat Raekwon remix (my only gripe)..

Doubles of the very ill Steve Colossal 7inch “The City That Bleeds”, doubles of the Constant Deviants EP “The All Nighter”, and last but not least, 7 inch doubles of the highly explosive Constant Deviant cut, “Fulton Street”…..

M.I. launches a hefty mic attack with lines like – “Efficiency, can’t be deficient in these streets / or be history”…..SAY WORD..

PEEP..

This instrumental project by X-Ray (Monster Island Czars) originally dropped in 09, but for some strange reason it didn’t get the attention that it deserved….

It is loaded with well crafted samples, heavy drums, etc…If you missed it the first go-round, YOU KNOW THE MOTHERFUCKING DRILL..

“X-Ray da Mindbenda has returned with a series of dope Beats and Skits appropriately tittled “The Ear Hustler” to be released worldwide on Mindbenda/Ioda/Sony on Nov 17th 2009.

Known for his dark and cinamatic beat scapes on project’s with MF Doom, Monsta Island Czars and Darc Mind. X-Ray’s music on the documentary feature Flim “On the Ropes” has won him a Sundance Flim Festival Award and was nominated for a Oscar in 1999.

His music is also featured on the “Soul in the Hole” Soundtrack (Loud Records). With his group Darc Mind “The Ear Hustler” is the first Solo Instrumental album entirely produced by X-Ray “…..

DJ S-KY comes correct on this mix that features a gang of under the radar cuts, interesting doubles, blends, etc….”Special Roasted Beans” clocks in at over an hour with a nonstop barrage of action…

Do yourself a favor and start your week off on the right foot….DONT SLEEP JACK !!!

“Uncut Raw” is easily one of the best albums to come out in the last four years….

Selfish & Fluent managed to create a timeless piece of art that deserves repeated listening…Creative lyricism, bugged out, off kilter sample wreckage, and well though out concepts….If you look at the cover you might just sleep on checking it out, but trust me – this album is packing extreme heat (can we please get that “Uncut Raw part 2 fellas)…

Over the years I have developed a friendship with Selfish….He is a interesting, humble, Chicago native that has his own steez…I rocked a interview with him awhile back (Selfish if your reading this I am headed to back to Chicago next month, so hit me up so we can do some more heavy digging famz)…

PEEP…

And while your at – you might as well download “Uncut Raw”…..They are offering a free download of the project over at GREEN LLAMA MUSIC for a limited time so you better not sleep jack !!!….
