Phill Most Chill – All Cuts Recorded Raw LP and before that I was listening to DJ XXXL Nippon Breaks & Beats – Volume 4 CD.When did you start collecting records?
When I was in high school, there used to be this radio station once a month at lunchtime, these two guys would set up a DJ console and play songs over the schools loudspeakers. One time they asked students to bring in a record if we wanted a “lesson”. The guys just showed us how to do basic radio cueing. Like winding the record half a spin back, then pressing the start button, and how to fade it in.I started collecting music since I was about 11 or 12 years old. But I was recording stuff from the radio earlier than that. I was collecting tapes first, and then it was CDs and bits and pieces of vinyl here and there for the bands I was fanatical about (Run DMC, N.W.A. and Public Enemy, for example)… I didn’t start collecting anything but hip-hop and electro until the late 90’s. I was sent a tape then by a guy called Soulman (Phill Most Chill) because I used to write for magazines and he sent it in for review, the tape was called “World Of Beats – Volume 2”, that tape always intrigued me, however I didn’t really understand it… it was a tape with samples from some of my favorite hip-hop songs and some other soul, jazz and funk songs. I used to always carry it in my backpack and play it in my mates cars… Curiosity killed the cat and I wanted to figure out what those records were.
It all started happening when the ABC (radio station) in Brisbane sold their entire record collection over a year-long period in the city. Every hour or so, new records from their library would hit the shelf in a mock-up store in the CBD. It was myself and my man James and Kenny who started diggin’ for things other than hip-hop then, the year 2000 was when it really started poppin’ off. I had some good mentors; DJ Damage, Hams and Arks, who showed me basic things like Ramsey Lewis, CTI Records, Prestige, Curtis Mayfield, Bob James, John Klemmer, Roy Ayers, etc.… and then “diggin’” turned into a monster which I really can’t control anymore. I’m still hunting records off that World Of Beats 2 tape, that really set the blueprint for my digging excavation and musical excursion. Thank you Soulman. You changed my life, not Dilla!

“For this first installment of Sound Traveler which is sure to be a long running series for Record Breakin’ Music, I decided to focus specifically on tunes that were given to me directly by artists and independent labels during my travels across the globe. Of course each selection comes directly from a vinyl source, after all Record Breakin’ is a label that understands the importance of pressing physical media so we wouldn’t do it any other way? In addition to those aforementioned I also decided to throw in a few cuts from some of my favorite albums that I have collected throughout the years. Genres include everything from Hip Hop to Jazz with a few Electronic touches and Radio Spots in between. And since everything was done with vinyl, it was also done in real time, no edits or corrections to flaws which give it an even more sense of authenticity.
Hopefully you will enjoy this mix as much as I enjoyed making it and it’s an honor to be featured in this brand new series known as Sound Traveler.”

The HOMELESS DERILIX from San Jose made their mark with the Stones Throw label when the imprint was in it’s beginning stages, and for some reason the duo didn’t remain with ST as they became a household name in the late 90’s (wonder how things would have turned out if they did)….

Pianist and composer Giovanni Fenati (from Romagna) had an intense recording career since the late 50’s. Starting with an orchestral repertoire, his style started to include contemporary elements aroud the end of the 60’s, and he released some albums under the nickname Mirageman for the Ariston label. Under this name three albums came out, issued between 1970 and 1972, but his previous two works, Music cocktail from 1969 and Per voi giovani from 1970 credited to Fenati, are in the same style.
Most of this keyboard-led instrumental production has little connection with progressive music, as demonstrated by the album titles, Per voi giovani and Alto gradimento were popular radio programs, and the albums were more in the easy listening/lounge music style.
Only the last one, Thunder and lightning, is definitely in a more progressive vein, with prominent electric guitar and flute over an orchestral background. Described as “Deep Purple jamming on some Henry Mancini-style instrumentals” on an Internet site, the ten track album is not far from the style of The Underground Set or Planetarium albums, and was released on the Ariston Gnomo progressive label.
Giovanni Fenati died in 1981 in a car accident.
