” Architect : Beat Tape “

Screen Shot 2016-04-05 at 9.41.40 PM

Had a long conversation with ARCHITECT (Homeless Derelix, Stones Throw, Encore, etc) the other night that went into the deepest depths of Hip Hop production…I have admired his creative sampling approaches for quite sometime, so it was interesting to hear him go into heavy detail about his outlook….

It’s crazy how many styles he can flip with the greatest of ease, and its somewhat criminal that his name isn’t mentioned more often when dudes are talking about ill producers from the west……Anyway, he informed me that he has a few “beat tape type” joints on his Soundcloud…..You better not sleep!!

” Tuesday Heat On Deck “

Screen Shot 2016-04-05 at 9.21.10 PM

Do yourself a favor and peep this wild archived RAW DEAL RADIO show (Tony D,  G, Eazy M, etc) from 1991….

“This tape kicks off with a drop by Ice-T and, later, features perhaps the laziest-sounding drop ever courtesy of KRS-One. This episode comes not too long after this previously posted episode where Eazy M, G, and Tony D were still in transition from “Club Krush” to “Raw Deal.” Here, we’re firmly in “Raw Deal” territory. For you nerds who want to know how I calculated the date: G discusses having just seen Boyz ‘N the Hood, which came out on Friday, July 12, 1991 (via All Movie Guide). In addition, he comments about how Almighty & KD Ranks’ “Trenton Where We From” will be available “very soon.” According to the All Music Guide, it was released on Tuesday, July 24, 1991. I originally dated this July 18, but a news item on side B noted that Jeffrey Dahmer had been charged, and that happened on July 25th (he wasn’t even apprehended until the 22nd).

Sometimes, I wish I had just labeled these tapes better.

So, the music. On side A, there’s some good local NJ hip-hop from Willingboro’s own Courageous Chief as well as an unreleased track (as far as I know) from KMC and Insane Poetry titled “No Title for This.” There’s also the great juxtaposition of a St. Ides ad and an alcohol/drug awareness PSA. Side B suffers from some occasional static (I wasn’t always listening live when I was recording a show), but has an interesting news report midway through and ends with a solid set of dope Trenton hip-hop courtesy of Tony D, including tracks from the Too Kool Posse, Almighty and KD Ranks, and an unreleased one from Tone himself with Rahzii Hi-Power (it’s his birthday and he’s also in studio). There’s also an incredibly dope St. Ides ad from Rakim on side B and my favorite Courageous Chief track, “Russian Roulette.”

” 45 Live “

Screen Shot 2016-04-05 at 9.10.19 PM

This collabo with EIGHT & SPICE ONE came out of nowhere…..I was somewhat skeptical before I gave it some burn, but from the intro I could tell this duo were on track….The vinyl pieces are already sold out so good luck finding this 45 treat for a decent price…..Produced by ALC.

” RIP : Prize Onerz “

Screen Shot 2016-03-26 at 8.36.29 AM

AWWWWWWWWW MAN……

Right now I am in a heavy state of shock while trying to come to grips with the passing of one of my ahki’s PRIZE ONERZ (TNS / GFC / UTI / NS)…I was blessed to come in contact with this young creative genius many years ago, and it was a honor to watch him blossom into a full blown giant when it came to graff..

I’m truly heartbroken and at a loss for words at the moment – so it’s probably more appropriate that I let his pieces do the talking…..We will miss you brother…

” Sound Engineering Steez “

Screen Shot 2016-03-21 at 9.54.42 PM

If you have been DJ’ing for a substantial period of time, I believe you are a sound engineer by default….Sure you might not know your way around all of the equipment, but more than likely your ears are trained and in tune with how your bass, mids, and treble are supposed to sit in the overall mix….

After spending countless years behind the turntables, it was somewhat second nature for me to navigate my way around a studio while mixing down my productions…The difficult part is finding an engineer that understands your vision, willing to take instructions without inserting their own two cents, and assist in getting things done in a timely fashion without interrupting the work flow, etc……

Luckily for me my go to engineer “DEMOLITION” fully understands that I’m going to stretch his mind to the fullest extent when I book a session….I have to literally get him in KING TUBBY, or LEE SCRATCH PERRY mode when we lock in….With that being said ANTON PUKSHANSKY is a engineer that I have always respected because of his willingness to experiment…His work with MAIN SOURCE, ERIC B & RAKIM, ORGANIZED KONFUSION, early NAS, and KOOL G.RAP has held up extremely well sonically (even though I could have done without that keyboard sax solo on “Streets of New York” hahaha)…He drops heavy gems on a recent interview with SEAN SETARO (Cipher podcast) that you should not miss….

TUNE IN….

God Damn….

Do yourself a favor and read this very thorough article by PRITT KALSI (KOB/DIGGERS/etc) that goes into detail about Hip Hop’s current state of affairs…While your at it- peep his store that is flooded with limited edition desert boots, T-shirts, Varsity jackets, medallions, etc….

“When people say that Hip Hop is dead blaming the artists, who change their sounds or don’t live up to the expectations to their fans delivering pretty standard albums I came to the conclusion that we the fans are hugely part to blame for this and the demise in the creativity of the current state of Hip Hop. There are some great records that we passed on, and lot of that is because how some people are listening to music is changing. Some so called Hip Hop fans play it safe and avoid the street music and prefer to listen to that nice hip hop that just talks about hip hop and how much they love it forgetting the grit and soul it came from, that’s fine if that’s what there into but personally this is where i’m lost, i miss the message that was being delivered by the music that had guts. It presented a picture of the day to day dealings and struggles, the highs and lows of living in the inner city. The music where artists / groups were driven by competition of being not just the best they can be, but better then the next group. Where the above strived to add and contribute to this music. Where producers lived for being creative, Im not saying that today’s music is bad, but the accepted bar or level of whats good isn’t that high. Being different is too often used to disguise the lack of real talent”.
