” Sage Infinite : Space Out “

screen-shot-2016-09-21-at-8-23-06-am

My objective with HIP HOP BATTLEFIELD is to present many aspects of this artform – past, present and future….I’m not one of those cats that stays frozen in time or believes new fly shit doesn’t exist…..Many of the people I come across only listen to their own music or close affiliates, but as a DJ it is imperative that I keep my ears open and busy as possible…It might sound corny or lame to some of the HHB readers when I state that “I’m still a fan, after all these years”…..

Anyway, here is some new shit that is worthy of some decent mixtape burn – Sage Infinite, “Space Out”….

Right after I heard this new joint by KANKICK & Dr.OOP Capone (Reel Ninja) – I called OOP up and told him that he sounds ill over “KK” beats and that they should rock a full length project…He proceeded to inform that a collaborative EP is already finished and fully mastered – and they were in talks with a few labels to get it out there….

screen-shot-2016-09-14-at-1-39-59-pm

Here is a little treat for the HIP HOP BATTLEFIELD daily readers….TONE HOOKER who was once apart of Original Flavor (Remember- Can I Get Open) put out a few 12’s in the mid-late 90’s….If you didn’t hear them when they initially dropped don’t feel bad – they were white label joints that didn’t really circulate to heavy….

” Showbiz Speaks “

screen-shot-2016-09-13-at-9-23-18-am

Alright folks,I’m fully charged up and ready to hit the battlefield with reckless abandon….Here is a recent interview with one of my favorite producers- the Bronx bomber Showbiz get’s the Q&A treatment by 7:30…

*Big up to my cuzzo UNIK ONE..

Can you tell the difference between songs that are created in a studio with chemistry versus songs made in isolation?

Right now, if you get a timeless song comparing it to the ‘90s era, there was a lot more timeless songs and that comes from the chemistry that people have in the studio. I was reading that on a blog site how they said that ODB came in and walked in the wrong studio and he got on the “Superstar” record, the Mariah Carey record. And things like that happen. And just like on Show and A.G. on “Got the Flava” on the the Goodfellas album, Method Man was in the next room and he walked in and heard the beat and wanted to kick a couple of bars to it. So that type of stuff happens.

You can’t really tell now because a lot of people do send their verses in. You really can’t tell now because the music ain’t the same as it was in the ‘90s. I believe you had a lot more authentic classics and timeless music in the ‘80s and the ‘90s and I think that music is a lot more timeless than the stuff that comes out now. You may like it for a couple of months because they play it all day long. If they don’t play it on the radio no more, you don’t remember the song. That’s the difference. This music is just forced on you.

What gives music the authenticity that you’re talking about?

As a producer, I’m only speaking for producers. You gotta have a knowledge of the hip-hop that was there before you. I believe those are the people that make the best hip-hop. The best hip-hop producers are students. Premier has been following hip-hop since it came out in the beginning and he can tell you records that he bought when he was in Texas. He had a lot of knowledge. His mother took him to a lot of concerts. He was well aware of how hip-hop was supposed to sound and people such as myself and Pete Rock and Diamond, everybody had kind of studied what hip-hop was to make the best hip-hop that they could make. I’m only speaking for the producers’ side though, definitely.

” Scratch Overdose 20 “

Screen Shot 2016-09-01 at 7.58.10 PM

My dude KODAC VISUALZ is a straight up monster when it comes to scratch patterns…When I first met him back in the late 90’s he was already light years ahead of dudes on the cuts, but now in 2016 I have to admit, he is a real problem out here….

KV has been making major moves with Asthma Funk, Q-Bert’s Scratch University, Killer Nuns, Born Sinnaz and now the BEAT JUNKIES featured him on their “Watch The Sound” video series..SALUTE!!!!!!

” Big Tune On Deck “

Screen Shot 2016-08-30 at 10.26.05 PM

A couple weeks ago I had a meeting at a west coast vinyl pressing plant that shall remain nameless…While I was there I was informed that they just received an additional 45 press that used to belong to the legend COXONE DODD….Needless to say I felt the intense energy emitting from this machine and it instantly put me in a heavy trance…..When it comes to reggae, COXONE was a powerhouse…I’m not going to get into his arsenal of accolades (That would take quite sometime), but to give you a glimpse into his influence, he was the first producer to audition Bob Marley, U Roy, Burning Spear, Horace Andy, Sugar Minott and countless others…..From the early 60’s up until his death in 2004 he churned out an amazing discography from his Studio One headquarters….

One of the groups that he worked with that deserve more attention is the SILVER TONES….In my opinion, “Cheating & Lying – Be Thankful” is one of the best roots and culture joints ever recorded…

POETIC VALUE- CHECK..
ORIGINAL HAUNTING PRODUCTION- CHECK..
LYRICS LACED WITH SUBSTANCE AND MEANING- CHECK..
EXCELLENT COMPOSITION & STRUCTURE- CHECK..
TIMELESS MATERIAL THAT STILL APPLIES TODAY- CHECK..

COXSONE’s ADDITIONAL DUB WORK ON THIS SONG IS SIMPLY INCREDIBLE…..

” Breakbeat Lou : Discogs Mix “

Screen Shot 2016-08-29 at 1.52.40 PM

WOW-

Since Monday is here, it’s only right that I post up this BREAKBEAT LOU “Discogs Mix” that is flooded with all types of heat…If your tired of hearing the same played out breaks over and over again, look no further because LOU rocks all types of secret society joints on this session….DONT SLEEP…

Louis “BreakBeat Lou” Flores is a pillar of hip-hop music and culture, whose contribution cannot be understated, overlooked or denied. Without his contribution, hip-hop music and production does not evolve in the late 1980s through the 1990s and beyond. If BreakBeat Lou is not present, many hip- hop DJs do not study the integral craft of diggin’ for records. And without his longstanding tradition of mixing and editing, many producers rise to fame and stardom never happens.

Any DJ, producer or record collector worth their weight in hip-hop gold will tell you the importance of Louis “BreakBeat Lou” Flores. He is quite simply your favorite’s favorite in hip-hop.

” MC Eight Salute “

Screen Shot 2016-08-26 at 12.00.38 PM

When it comes to west coast Hip Hop greats MC EIGHT is not mentioned nearly enough….The first 3 CMW albums are not only classics, they also managed to keep their production sample heavy without copying what Dr.Dre was doing at the time (Unlike the majority of their contemporaries)….

Earlier this year he dropped a couple 45’s with ALCHEMIST & SPICE ONE that are worthy of your attention if they slid passed past your radar…

PEEP….

*Not sure what happened to the DJ Premier collabo album that was discussed a few years back…Hopefully one day that will happen, but at this point I doubt it..
