” Melanin 9 : Amulets “

Picture 8

London wordsmith Melanin 9 has been dropping his brand of hardcore for some time now….With every release his wordplay gets more and more intricate, for instance on “Amulets” he flips plenty bars that are worthy of rewind status….

Some of his patterns venture into the Nas “Illmatic era” chamber, but it’s still a enjoyable listen regardless….

” Joe Mansfield : Beatbox Drum Machine Obsession “

Picture 7

As a member of VINYL REANIMATORS, Joe Mansfield had a hand in creating some top notch productions in the 90’s….Now he steps up to the plate on the writing tip with the release of “Beatbox Drum Machine Obsession”…

The bundle pack comes with the book, a 7inch, and even a cassette to rock out with….DONT SLEEP..

Peep this breakdown of some of his favorite drum machines…

Roland R8
I picked this machine up when it was released in 1989. The R8 is special to me because I used it on Ed O.G.’s Life of a Kid in the Ghetto album. I sampled the jazz snare drum on the song “Be a Father to Your Child,” and I used the tambourine sound for “I Got to Have It.” I still think this machine has one of the coolest-sounding tambourines.

Yamaha RX5
This was the first brand-new drum machine I ever bought, in 1986. After a trip to Looney Tunes, a great used record store in Boston, I went next door to E.U. Wurlitzer Music and ended up walking out with the RX5. After having the machine for a few weeks, though, I remember thinking it wasn’t a great purchase and I wished I had saved my money. I got bored with the sounds pretty quickly. A couple years after that, I soured on it even more after it was used extensively on M.C. Hammer’s first album.

Wurlitzer Side Man
I found my Side Man in Detroit, on a record hunting trip back in 1993. While I was on the way to our first record store, I spotted a cool-looking second-hand store. In the back corner, mixed in with vintage stereo equipment, was the Wurlitzer Side Man. At first, I thought it was an old cabinet stereo system, but upon further inspection I noticed the sound trigger buttons, and I knew it was something more. I think I spent $25 on it. The shipping back to Boston was considerably more than the machine itself!

Roland TR-808
This one, along with the Oberheim DMX, is a quintessential hip-hop drum machine. The 808 was the first drum machine I ever bought, so that makes it very special to me. I love the way it looks–it reminds me of a vintage computer. The light show you can get when you play back a rhythm on the 808 can’t be beat. Each one of the red lights beats in time with the track. It’s pretty amazing to see in a dark room.

Oberheim DMX
This machine is the backbone of some of the greatest hip-hop songs ever made. The DMX hand-clap was a hip-hop staple in the early-to-mid 80s. I also love the tight bass drum and sharp hi-hat sounds. I have spent many, many hours using this machine to recreate all of my favorite hip-hop tracks.

” Thirstin Howl 3rd : 2013 “

Picture 8

Thirstin Howl 3rd joins in with Agallah & Alchemist on the first leak from their upcoming EP – Past & Present (If this song is any indication I am assuming Agallah will be dropping NEW verses over OLD Alchemist beats)…

It's been awhile since I heard anything from Thirstin, so this is a nice surprise….

* On another note, before MOBB DEEP rocked over this same sample source on the "Realest", Bronx bombers the LEGION already blessed this loop a couple years earlier on "Rest In Peace"…

Todays break comes courtesy of the mysterious PARRY label from Canada (MOODS FOR DRAMA -1977- PERRY MUSIC LIBRARY 4)….

On the song “The Big Climb” the drama gets unveiled over lovely drum chops that will give you a boost of B-Boy morale..If this doesn’t help you get your mind right, I don’t know what will..

” Chris Read : The Funky Drummers “

Picture 4

Start your day off correctly by checking out the latest CHRIS READ mix (Funky Drummers part1)…..BIG UP TO ALL MY PEOPLE IN THE UK..

The name gives a lot away here – a mix of the world’s funkiest drummers – 100 or so of Funk, Soul, Rock & Jazz’s finest breakbeats and licks in a 20 minute mix! A labour of love which started life some years ago, the mix comes in two parts with two different versions of each (one with all the trimmings, one with just the drums!). I decided it was about time I finally made it available and will be uploading it in parts over the coming weeks / months. There will also be a double CD offering with an exclusive bonus mix coming soon.

The subtitle ‘Crunkies Pick’ refers to Cut Chemist’s drum heavy ‘Bunky’s Pick’ cut up and J-Rocc’s similarly styled ‘Junkies Pick’ to which (along with Steinski’s seminal ‘Lesson’ edits) this is an homage of sorts. – Chris Read

” MF Grimm & Drasar Monumental : GMV-2 Review “

Picture 7

You know it’s going to be a good day when you wake up and spot a “5 out of 5” rating for an album that you took part in….What makes this occasion even better is that the person who wrote the review lives in a different country, doesn’t know me whatsoever on a personal level, and seems to be well versed in Hip Hop, past and present…

My only complaint is that CLAAA7 referred to me as a newcomer….I understand where he is coming from somewhat, but I’m far from “NEW TO THIS”…

1..I have been involved in all elements of this artform since I was a child (my father was in a mobile DJ unit crew in my formative years, so DJ’ing is in my blood)…

2..Over the years I have “put out” a wide array of mixtapes, remixes, productions, etc…

3..I’m a member of a few heavyweight crews that are DOWN BY LAW….Period. (NSZ/GFC/AYAK)…..

4..Hip Hop Battlefield has been up and running for nearly 7 years…Those years have included countless live mixes (BATTLEFIELD FUNK RADIO), interviews, and all types of action…

5…Even though some might be aware of me from the DJ/production side – I also have slayed many suckers with my rhymes…..Ask around, you might find out that my bars are dangerous as well cuzzo….

6…A few Hip Hop notables have rocked over my beats in the past…Go track that shit down if your halfway interested…

7..I could go on and on about my life long dedication to this artform, but that would seem as if I’m trying to pat myself on the back….Take a listen to the music, I’m quite sure you can tell it was made by someone who has studied the scrolls for a long period of time…

As far as the review goes that’s my only true gripe..Salute to you CLAAA7 for taking the time to go in-depth with our music it is appreciated to the fullest…..

Legendary, yet unfortunately often criminally underrated, emcee MF Grimm and relatively new-on-the-scene producer extraordinaire Drasar Monumental is back with “Golden Triangle”; the very limited vinyl only release of the sequel to last years slamming “Good Morning Vietnam”. In my original review of the aforesaid project I gave the 7 tracks EP a 4/5 rating, a rating which I still stand by, but the second installment in the series is even better in most every respect, and works as both a stand alone piece and as a complete back-to-back listen together with the first EP. On “Golden Triangle” the chemistry between Grimm and Drasar has been even more solidified into one of the most magnificent emcee/producer collaborations in recent memory; the music is more powerful and dynamic; the album’s metaphorical key themes have seriously been amplified and weaved into the music on a whole ‘nother level, through both powerful skits, samples and Grimm’s lyrics; and the running time and included tracks is almost twice as much amplifying the original EP into a full-blown LP.

” Style Warz : Round 5 “

Picture 5
(TMT)

The ongoing battle for supremacy between TMT & TC5 continues as we speak…For round 5 these two legendary crews pulled out all the stops for the aerosol championship belt…

On the TMT side my dude KHUFU ONERZ (the man responsible for the “GMV” 1&2 cover art) joined in with SKEME & CHAIN 3 to rock a Zulu anniversary car that is straight up ridiculous…

And for the TC5 section we get DOC & SYE going for theirs…..

Quit stalling and cast your votes for the best production troopers…This battle will definitely go down in the books as a classic style fest (click on photos to further analyze the wreckage)..
