” Big Tune On Deck “

A couple weeks ago I had a meeting at a west coast vinyl pressing plant that shall remain nameless…While I was there I was informed that they just received an additional 45 press that used to belong to the legend COXONE DODD….Needless to say I felt the intense energy emitting from this machine and it instantly put me in a heavy trance…..When it comes to reggae, COXONE was a powerhouse…I’m not going to get into his arsenal of accolades (That would take quite sometime), but to give you a glimpse into his influence, he was the first producer to audition Bob Marley, U Roy, Burning Spear, Horace Andy, Sugar Minott and countless others…..From the early 60’s up until his death in 2004 he churned out an amazing discography from his Studio One headquarters….
One of the groups that he worked with that deserve more attention is the SILVER TONES….In my opinion, “Cheating & Lying – Be Thankful” is one of the best roots and culture joints ever recorded…
POETIC VALUE- CHECK..
ORIGINAL HAUNTING PRODUCTION- CHECK..
LYRICS LACED WITH SUBSTANCE AND MEANING- CHECK..
EXCELLENT COMPOSITION & STRUCTURE- CHECK..
TIMELESS MATERIAL THAT STILL APPLIES TODAY- CHECK..
COXSONE’s ADDITIONAL DUB WORK ON THIS SONG IS SIMPLY INCREDIBLE…..
” Breakbeat Lou : Discogs Mix “

WOW-
Since Monday is here, it’s only right that I post up this BREAKBEAT LOU “Discogs Mix” that is flooded with all types of heat…If your tired of hearing the same played out breaks over and over again, look no further because LOU rocks all types of secret society joints on this session….DONT SLEEP…
Louis “BreakBeat Lou” Flores is a pillar of hip-hop music and culture, whose contribution cannot be understated, overlooked or denied. Without his contribution, hip-hop music and production does not evolve in the late 1980s through the 1990s and beyond. If BreakBeat Lou is not present, many hip- hop DJs do not study the integral craft of diggin’ for records. And without his longstanding tradition of mixing and editing, many producers rise to fame and stardom never happens.
Any DJ, producer or record collector worth their weight in hip-hop gold will tell you the importance of Louis “BreakBeat Lou” Flores. He is quite simply your favorite’s favorite in hip-hop.
” MC Eight Salute “

When it comes to west coast Hip Hop greats MC EIGHT is not mentioned nearly enough….The first 3 CMW albums are not only classics, they also managed to keep their production sample heavy without copying what Dr.Dre was doing at the time (Unlike the majority of their contemporaries)….
Earlier this year he dropped a couple 45’s with ALCHEMIST & SPICE ONE that are worthy of your attention if they slid passed past your radar…
PEEP….
*Not sure what happened to the DJ Premier collabo album that was discussed a few years back…Hopefully one day that will happen, but at this point I doubt it..
” Heavy Mellow Mix “

Over three hours of heavy groove morale on deck……
Heavy mellow: two words that can describe so much of the music that’s created in Hawaii. This is what inspired us in our latest mix, the relaxed sounds of our islands that move us deeply. On June 10th, 2016, clothing company Claymore Minds invited Aloha Got Soul to spin records for the launch party of their “Heavy Mellow” T-shirt series, hosted at About The Goods in Honolulu. We jumped at the opportunity, embracing the theme to curate a unique selection that showcases the seriously sublime soundscape of Hawaii’s musical palette: new age and folk from the 1980s; psych from the 1970s; hip hop from the 1990s and 2000s; funk and soul from the 1970s.
From the opening track of a subtly forward-thinking, slack key-inspired tune called “Melody Of Hanalei” (mellow-dy?), to the outro that competes for the rest of the world’s currently insatiable hunger for boogie — this mix is an excellent example of what weenjoy spinning when the canvas is wide open. Claymore Minds granted us full creative control to fill the room with the music we love. We couldn’t thank them enough for this.
Recorded live. All vinyl.

” Flick Of The Day “

THE BOXCUTTER BROTHERS (Ayatollah & myself) have released three instrumental albums as a production duo….If you would have told me ten years ago that we would link up, forge a friendship, put out music, and build heavy on a regular basis I would call you a liar, but life has a funny way of magnetizing like-minded people…
AYATOLLAH is not only a talented beat smith, he is a down to earth cat that appreciates all of the elements of this art form (Just like myself)…We have a few surprises up our sleeves for 2016, but as of now it is top secret information….HAHAHAHAHA……Here is the sampler for our first outing BOXCUTTER BROTHER #1 if you missed it on the first go-round…

” Strictly Merciless Session “

When it comes to dancehall my top 5 goes like this * In no particular order-
1..NINJAMAN
2..BURRO BANTON
3..BOUNTY KILLER
4..CUTTY RANKS
5..MERCILESS
If you give this strictly MERCILESS mix by “Warrin Don from Clarendon” a decent decent listen, you will fully understand why he made my list….CHECK IN!!!
” Nuff Respect : Bates “

At this point in time it’s damn near impossible to front on BATES….For the past 25 years he has showed and proved what dedication, determination, and supreme creativity is all about….What really catches my attention is that he almost never repeats his outlines, fills or color schemes (Which is a rarity these days)..Peep this documentary on BATES if you know what’s best for you……

” Tenshun Wreckage “

When it comes to abrasive drum wreckge – San Diego’s DJ TENSHUN is in a hardcore league of his own….If your in the mood for some dusty, lo-fi percussion abuse, do yourself a favor and check in trooper – play at extremely loud volumes for maximum effect…

” Sure Shot”

Finally got around to listening to PSYCHO LES’s “Dank God” album that just dropped…In my opinion King Kong (featuring Sean P) takes the championship belt without a fraction of a doubt with outrageously sinister lines like, “Your a dick in the butt dude / dress like New Edition when they were in Krush Groove”….
” Psycho Les : Drop A Gem Podcast “

Those DROP A GEM from dudes from Queens NYC are not playing when it comes to bringing the heat on their podcast….For instance, they recently caught up with one half of the BEAT NUTS (Psycho Les) for all types of jewelry that is worthy of your immediate attention…..
*You can also catch AYATOLLAH & I ( BOXCUTTER BROTHERS) on their show a few months back if you missed it the first go-round (FFWD TO THE 10 MINUTE MARK)…..

” Brazilian Soul Power “

A few years back I was the special guest on Dave Jones African Rhythm’s radio show at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada….Dave is a good dude with a very eclectic taste in music, he also has one of the illest record shops in Canada (Vinyl Records, you can cop from him online as well- look him up if you know what’s best for you)…
On one of his most recent broadcast, he takes it all the way to Brazil with all types of vinyl treats on deck…Don’t sleep…
” Highly Recommended Read “

The Cabbage Patch, the Wop, Robocop, Running Man, Smurfrock, Gigolo, and all types of ridiculous flashbacks hit me when I read this excellent article by Maulud Sadiq…..Even though I fully understand where he is coming from with this well written piece, in my opinion, the only true Hip Hop dance is B-Boying, everything else is a diluted version…
Anyway, do yourself a favor and check this out in it’s entirety….

” Bad Cop : No Gimmicks Mix “

BAD COP is back for another rare, under the radar session to help boost your weekend festivities….NO GIMMICKS RAP SHIT 17-18..
*Big up to my cuzzo UNIK ONE…..
